New Canal Street Digbeth Birmingham B5 5LG, middle of Birmingham’s East Side City Park.
The Woodman is a Grade II listed building which was built in 1897 for Ansell's Brewery. It was designed by renowned Birmingham architects James and Lister Lea in ornate brick and terracotta. Both the Bar and Smoke Room are tiled throughout in Minton tiles and the bar counter and back fitting are pretty much intact. The range of ales is varied and interesting and well worth a visit for connoisseurs of ale and architecture.
This was a pub when I was so much younger to come and join our mates for a cracking good night out, it was on my top list of Digbeth pubs, not because of the atmosphere and great booze it was like stepping back into history books with the original fixtures of the Victorian pub, you could imagine the old boys in their caps sitting around playing cards with a cold beer in front of them after a long week of hard labour being surrounded by riches they could not ever afford but feel like rich man with the beauty of the internal decorations.
It was worth a walk from the 37 bus to The Woodman, I am so glad it remains a poplar pub today, with so much has changed to the surrounding landscape it now centres of landscape gardens, much improved some will say, it stands out amongst the new builds of today, I wonder in another 100 years will these buildings remain when we have the Victorians showing us how to make a building look proud standing on a street.
Our sweethearts have just come away spending an afternoon visiting the Thinktank Birmingham Science Museum, now they are ready for a hearty meal and some good refreshing drinks. Thankfully it’s only a short distance away to get out of the rain to a welcoming pub with a fire to warm up those cold damp feet of hers.
He tells her she is a treat here as he knows how much she enjoys being surrounded by period fixtures and a warm fire place, just hope its lit. Our
Lady is so cheered up with the view of the pub in sight, that she holds him tight to her body and tells him how much she has enjoyed their day together
